T

his is Metropol's first issue for 2015 and the team here wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. I would like to add to that a fervent wish for the continuation of the freedom of expression we enjoy here, as on the last day of my holiday I heard news of the terror attack on the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The massacre has shaken me. Eight journalists, two police officers, a maintenance worker and a visitor were killed in the attack. It was a direct attack on democratic principles of freedom of speech and expression in response to Charlie Hebdo's mockery of fundamentalism in all its guises. “Je suis Charlie” the slogan that has been rapidly adopted by supporters in a show of solidarity to free speech plays over in my mind. My reaction has probably been exacerbated by my choice of reading material over the holidays. I have been immersed in Ken Follett's 'Century' trilogy and am currently in the midst of reliving the rise of the Third Reich. I have been vicariously living the fear in which those resisting fascism existed, a time when everyday people feared voicing even the slightest criticism of the regime. Obviously we must stand up against any violence, bullying and terrorism that threatens to take freedom from us. However the radicals involved in the Paris terror attack know full well they are fuelling tensions and animosity between Muslims and the West and backlash can be a dangerous thing. That's why I was heartened by the #illridewithyou hashtag, a show of support for Muslim Australians, after the recent siege at the Lindt cafe in Sydney. The hashtag apparently came from a Facebook post from Rachael Jacobs who was riding on a train, and noticed a Muslim woman quietly take off her head covering. In her post she said: "I ran after her at the train station. I said 'put it back on. I'll walk with u'." Current world events are a timely reminder that freedom of speech and expression also comes with the responsibility of tolerance and openmindedness.

FIVE MINUTES by Angela Bennett

five minutes with Dr Greg Phillipson D

r Greg Phillipson, with his extensive training in obstetrics and gynaecology and having worked tirelessly in fertility for over 25 years, has delivered many Cantabrian babies into the world. He was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School and completed his medical training in Otago. His private practice at Fertility Associates, St Georges Hospital, includes all aspects of IVF, recurrent miscarriage, microsurgery for men and women, and laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and fertility delay. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian, New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. An avid cyclist - you'll often see him cycling or perhaps running the streets of Christchurch. I caught up with him on his recent return from Africa where he was doing volunteer work, along with his youngest child, daughter Juliette, in Naan Kuse conservation park, Namibia.

What enticed you to volunteer to help out in a safari park in Africa? A patient described her experience and I thought this would be a great trip to do with my daughter Juliette who has just finished secondary school. It was a chance to feed the animals close up and also learn about wildlife conservation.

6 January 15, 2015 Metropol

CONTINUAL CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS HAVE ALLOWED MANY TO HAVE CHILDREN IN SITUATIONS WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE A FEW YEARS AGO.

What did your daughter think of the experience? Had she been to Africa before? A great first visit to Africa, she was able to hand feed many wild animals. We also met great people working there with other volunteers. After 'roughing' it for two weeks what were the luxuries you missed most from NZ? Cold drinks and ice cream are missed when it's 40oC. What was the highlight of your trip? Feeding cheetahs large cuts of fresh meat. As a doctor, did you have any concerns about visiting Africa? No, I had previously travelled and worked in Africa. The locals are always informed of any risks.

It must be difficult to get away from your busy practice; are there times of year that are busier with fertility planning or births? With a large team of scientists, nurses and doctors, the clinic manages easily. Fertility problems are all year round, including Christmas.

OUT & ABOUT

Greg and Juliette What inspired you to specialise in embryology and fertility? IVF was only science fiction when I was at university. The rapid changes in this area of medicine have now achieved more than five million births worldwide. It's an exciting area to work in with many challenges and genetics is advancing rapidly.

What one book would you suggest everyone read? George Orwell, 1984.

What are three of the most common concerns patients come to you with? Uncertainty and lack of explanation for their delay in conceiving is the most important. Unfortunately, a third of the people never get a good answer to explain their situation.

What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind “I shouldn't be doing this”? Two weeks ago I was being driven in an open Landrover in the dark at 80km an hour with no seatbelts on a shingle road. An unexpected animal could have had serious consequences.

What advice would you give to couples thinking about starting a family? Have a GP who you can easily ask questions to. Ensure questions are answered. Plan to start before age 35. What do you enjoy most about your specialist career? The continual changes and improvements have allowed many to have children in situations which would have been impossible a few years ago. What are the biggest challenges? Keeping up to date. Keeping on time!

If you could go back and tell your teenage self something, what would it be? Don't plan for the future, let it happen.

Greg meets Ostrich What do you do to unwind from work? Exercise takes your mind off everything. Christchurch has great areas on the Port Hills to unwind, either on a bike or on foot.

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Christchurch? Prior to the earthquakes Bon Billi, but now any of the new cafes that have sprung up.

What is your proudest achievement? Setting up the IVF Clinic in Christchurch in 1991 from scratch with a great team of only four people. Healthy twins were born from the third treatment!

What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Prior to University I worked full time as a City Council Rubbish Collector.

What is one thing you would like to see in the “new” Christchurch? A world class multisport water facility and sports ground around the damaged area of the Avon, near Kerrs Reach.

What are you like at parties? I am unpredictable, between quiet and boring but other times the last to leave and noisy. What's next on the wish list? One day, South America.

or this year's Summer Shakespeare Festival, Top Dog Theatre strays from its usual path of presenting another comedy, and will instead portray the treacherous deeds and mysterious happenings of Macbeth. This year's show is directed by Derek Doddington. Set in Scotland, mainly within and without the Castle of Macbeth, Mona Vale will be transformed for this great tragedy of greed, fate and treason all culminating in the ultimate fear and madness of Macbeth and his wife. “When shall we three meet again” opens the play, as the three witches confront Macbeth with a prophesy that he will one day become King of Scotland. Ambition and treachery abound as Macbeth is persuaded by his callous and ambitious wife to eliminate all those who stand in their way. Venue: The Mound Lawn, Mona Vale Gardens, Christchurch. Opens on Wednesday 11 February and runs through to Saturday 21 February. Performances are 6pm to 8:10pm every night, with added matinees on both Saturdays. Quirky love story

E

lmwood Players' Children's Theatre returns again in 2015 with a quirky love story adventure tale adapted from the classic poem, “The Owl and the Pussycat”. In a land far, far away an Owl longs for adventure and excitement. But how do you find excitement and adventure? You go to visit a friendly and slightly crazy Travel Agent, who just happens to be a Parrot, that's how. Accompanied by his new friend Pussycat, Owl builds a boat and the pair 'sail away for a year and a day' where they reach a fantastical island. There they meet a very hungry Piggywig, a befuddled Turkey, and fall in love. Along the way they have lots of fun, dance by the light of the moon and chase three blind mice! Director and choreographer Anna Willows is over the moon to bring this heart-warming family-friendly tale to the stage. We all need some magic and romance in our lives these days and this happy little tale fits the bill. It is full of toe-tapping dance numbers, comedy, and crazy animals that the whole family will love. With a small but talented, high energy cast, this show will not fail to entertain and amuse all who fall under its spell. Make this summer magical and travel to an island far, far away. The Owl and the Pussycat is written by Tim Bray, directed by Anna Willows and presented by Elmwood Players at the Elmwood Auditorium, 31 Aikmans Rd, Merivale, Christchurch. 15 to 18 and 22 to 24 January, 6:30pm Thursdays and Fridays; 11am and 2pm Saturdays and Sunday (No evening performance Saturdays or Sunday). Lisa with some of her vibrant abstract artworks

fter many years working in Australia, London and New York, Lisa has been back in Christchurch since the earthquakes and has finally decided to settle here. “I've spent over 20 years exploring the world but have always returned to my home city and have now decided to settle down and create a business that incorporates everything that I love,” says Lisa. This venture will include everything from creating customised artworks to graphic design, creative event concepts, full e vent planning and event styling for any kind of occasion ranging from a small private dinner party to a large corporate event or wedding. Lisa has always had a strong creative urge, as well as a desire to explore and discover the world, from a very early age. “As a four-year-old, I had an argument with my mum as I wanted to walk to the Ilam Road shops by myself. I had to wait until I was five, and even then was annoyed at Mum because she watched me from the letterbox, clearly to make sure I was safe, but in my eyes that wasn't fair as I hadn't done it completely by myself,” says Lisa. “I've always been creative and determined, and at 12, I had a little shed in the back garden where I spent hours creating care-bears, painted pots adorned with bows and items I sold at the local gift shop in Cashmere.

“THE COMMON THEME THROUGHOUT MY LIFE IS THAT I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED THERE IS NO REASON WHY WE CAN'T DO WHATEVER WE DREAM OF. THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, AS THE ONLY LIMITS ARE THE ONES YOU GIVE YOURSELF.” “At 15, I planned my first event, a school disco, and at 17, with a desire for independence, as I wasn't allowed to leave school until I had a job, I put together a creative portfolio and knocked on doors until I was given a job at Nicholson Press. “This is where my graphic design career began, and later I operated my own design business, Jumping Jellyfish Design.” Selling my art began after an electrician visited my home and, noticing the art on the walls, suggested I approach Heart of Art to sell my work. “I wasn't overly confident my art was good enough to sell but realised I had nothing to lose so showed them my work, and my art career was born,” says Lisa. “That was 14 years ago and since that time I've held exhibitions around the world, with my works being viewed on almost every continent.

OUT & ABOUT

With a tropical backyard of beach, reef and rainforest, it's no wonder Port Douglas is such a popular destination for New Zealanders. It's all about relaxation, from the inviting shops and cafes along Macrossan Street to the pristine golden curve of Four Mile Beach and the fun and colour of Sunday morning's market.

By Wendy Dunlop

Beachside or flipside T

PORT DOUGLAS IS A DESTINATION OF SURPRISING DIVERSITY THAT YOU CAN EXPLORE INDEPENDENTLY AT YOUR OWN PACE.

he proximity of Port Douglas to the Great Barrier Reef means an excursion to the Low Isles is barely an hour away, but an atmosphere of remoteness will have you mesmerised by colours and corals, myriads of tropical fish and the magic of swimming with turtles if you're lucky. On a luxury cruise with Sail Away V you'll enjoy a half day experience that delivers you there on a gleaming yacht, serves you canapés and champagne, introduces you to the finest marine environment in the world and then dishes up a magnificent sunset on the way home! There's everything from pub fare to fine dining in Port Douglas, but you would be short changing yourself if you didn't head for Two Fish where the words “fresh and fabulous” describe a menu of succulent seafood, tapas innovation and even crocodile for gastronomic bravery. Visitors are understandably reluctant to leave beach, sand and sloth, but there's a flipside to Port Douglas that's well worth exploring. Nearby Mossman offsets the resort style of Port Douglas with the green glory of Mossman Gorge and the Daintree River. The Saturday market offers a burgeoning variety of items that are farmed, fed, fetched or fashioned and is a testament to homemade and home grown. The district's Whyanbeel Valley is home to

the tropical orchard and charming Riverside Restaurant of High Falls Farm and New Zealand's very own Hoglund Glass Gallery. Celebrating the indigenous culture of the Kuku Yalanji people who have lived in the region's rainforest for centuries, the Mossman Gorge Centre's guided walks, wildlife and cultural tours provide an authentic educational and spiritual experience not to be missed. An art lesson at Janbal Gallery under the tutelage of Binna Swindley is another highlight. Northern Queensland is home to some wicked wildlife that can do some terrific harm if you encounter them anywhere but a wildlife park! Hartleys Crocodile Adventures is as close as you'd want to get to Tex, Rex and his mates. Port Douglas is endowed with wonderful accommodation, but Mandalay Apartments are hard to beat for quality, comfort and a stone's throw from Four Mile Beach. Or revel in the exclusive bush clad location of Thala Beach Lodge. Port Douglas is a destination of surprising diversity that you can explore independently at your own pace. For information and inspiration go to www.visitportdouglasdaintree.com. Travel writer Wendy Dunlop recently visited Port Douglas by invitation of Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree.

Summer days in Sumner By Rachel Smith

It's the perfect Sunday for a summer day out - to feel the sand between your toes, the sun on your skin and take a wander through a local market.

S

CHILDREN ARE ALSO A LARGE PART OF THE MARKET, WITH A FREE CHILDREN'S STALL GIVING THEM THE SPACE TO CREATE THEIR OWN PIECES FOR SALE OR TO FUNDRAISE, WITH A SPECIAL CHILDREN'S FOCUSED MARKET TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY 21 FEBRUARY.

16 January 15, 2015 Metropol

umner has always been a destination in itself, with their new Sumner Sunday Market created to not only bring the city back out to the village, but also to provide the residents of Sumner with a place to gather and socialise. On the Village Green stallholders sell their quality goods, with a focus on those which are handmade. From upcycled furniture, homeware and beautiful imported Turkish throws, to antiques, doggy treats, jewellery and art work, there is much to choose from. People wander through, watching the live entertainment and sampling from the food stalls – a freshly made breakfast burrito, handmade pasta or sweet treats, all made by local people with a flair for creating great food. “We wanted to have something for the community,” says Colette Doughty, who has

worked with the Sumner Residents Association and its Sumner Hub over the winter, to get the market up and running. The idea for the market first arose through a conversation Colette had with Edwin Daniel from the Sumner Community Residents Association, who provide ongoing support and financial management for the market. They talked of the need to create something positive within the community after years of battling through earthquake related issues, with a local market seeming the ideal solution. Colette, who is employed as the Community Support Coordinator for Events for the Residents Association, took on the role. Assisted in the initial stages by Emma Broadbent, on-site manager every Sunday is Fleur Brigid, who also runs the Fairytales and Wonderland children's clothing stall.

THE ENTERTAINMENT IS PROVING TO BE VERY POPULAR, AND OFFERS A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE EACH WEEK, FROM A DRUM BAND, TO STREET ENTERTAINERS, TO AUTHOR AND PERFORMER CRAIG SMITH. Their original plan to start out small quickly changed with the possibility of support through the Christchurch City Council's transitional city projects fund. The market expanded to include 39 stalls, with continued interest as word has spread. The market is held at the Village Green, which has a history of being a focal point for the community. Originally the site of the community centre and library, the green was created by locals after the earthquake damaged buildings were removed, with the space made available for the market by Life in Vacant Spaces. Community involvement is at the core of the market, which is well supported by local businesses. Free power is generously provided by the Sumner Health Centre, and many of the businesses offer market specials each Sunday.

“It's not a profit making market,” says Colette. “Everything is going straight back into the community.” Every week one community group from Sumner runs a stall at the market, which they can use to fundraise or promote events, with a $50 donation gifted to them from the market themselves. To date these have included groups such as the Sumner Running Club, Bridge to Rocks Timebank and Fuse youth group, with all community groups welcomed to take part over the market season. Children are also a large part of the market, with a free children's stall giving them the space to create their own pieces for sale or to fundraise, with a special children's focused market to be held on Sunday 21 February. “We give the kids an opportunity to perform,” says Colette, with local kids warming up the

crowd before the live entertainment each week. The entertainment is proving to be very popular, and offers a different experience each week, from a drum band, to street entertainers, to author and performer Craig Smith. The market also includes activities such as face painting and balloon artists, demonstrations for adults including a recent 'learn to crochet' session by Liz Kerslake from Bridge2Rocks Timebank, and the chance to assist in creating a second mosaic chair in the Village Green over the summer with Megan Collins. With Cave Rock and the Scarborough children's pool area reopening over the summer, there is indeed new life and energy in the village. “Come for the day – to the beach, the market and the hills,” says Colette. The Sumner Sunday Market is held every Sunday on the Village Green from 10am – 2pm, until daylight saving ends in April. Contact Colette on market@sumnerhub.org.nz or Facebook, to see what's happening next week at the market.

OUT & ABOUT

Wizards & fairies It's no secret that the Wizard of New Zealand has an affection for little children and this was certainly evident during the celebration of his 182nd birthday at The Tannery in Woolston.

know how to party

ADDING A LOVELY TOUCH OF COLOUR WAS A BEVY OF FAIRIES, WHO JOINED THE WIZARDS IN DANCING AND MINGLED WITH THE CHILDREN, SPRINKLING BLUE FAIRY DUST ONTO THE HAIR OF SOME ENCHANTED GIRLS.

T

he festivities began on a recent Saturday afternoon with the presentation to the Wizard of a gigantic birthday cake, which he then began to systematically cut into slices and present to dozens of children in The Tannery's atrium. To one side of the Wizard were five of his henchmen, all dressed in black and with conical hats, who were presenting the kids with balloons – and it was obvious that these children were loving every moment of the wonderful things happening around them. Adding a lovely touch of colour to this was a bevy of fairies, who joined the wizards in dancing and mingled with the children, sprinkling blue fairy dust onto the hair of some enchanted girls. Even Alasdair Cassels, the head of Cassels and Sons, who initiated the development of The Tannery, was right in the middle of it, thoroughly enjoying himself while handing out chocolate bars from a big cloth bag. Of course, the celebrations took many other forms, with a surprisingly large number of other people from all walks of life taking part. On first entering The Tannery at about 3.30pm, there was a group of children singing around a grand piano. It turns out that these

were the choir from the Rudolf Steiner School in St Martins. Towards the other end of the atrium was the Woolston Brass band in full blast; while a group of straw-hatted Morris dancers took every opportunity to jig around. Even the wizards played some blues on guitars and other instruments. For the record, the other five wizards at this event were Ari and Kierin, now full wizards; Barrie, an auxiliary; and Nick and Daniel, both apprentices. The head guy, who is known to his friends as Jack, had himself promoted to ArchWizard at another festive occasion held up at the Gondola a couple of months ago.

Although Jack admits his 182nd birthday is a bit of an exaggeration, he is already planning to take part in other special upcoming events. Metropol January 15, 2015 23

his celebrated catwalk extravaganza is where lingerie and couture meet and the world's most beautiful models – known as Victoria's Secret Angels blaze down the runway. In the recent show the overall theme, and that of the lavish after-party, was inspired by the Black & White Ball, a legendary masquerade ball hosted by Truman Capote in 1966. Swarovski complemented the runway looks with ornate jewellery pieces on loan from its archive. The result had those attending saying it was the “most brilliant show yet”. Of particular note, the Fairy Tale section of the show was a dazzling celebration of Victoria's Secret's heritage which showcased the breath-taking Angel Wings, a custom look created exclusively for Swarovski. Boasting larger wings, and embellished with more crystals (over 150,000) than any other outfit in the show's history, the Fairy Tale outfit was designed by Serkan Cura, the rising star of Parisian couture. Twenty-seven-year-old British model Lily Donaldson, renowned for her campaigns with Burberry and Gucci and for her appearances on the covers of top-flight publications such as Vogue, brought the

exquisite fantasy to life. With the most crystals featured in the show to date, Swarovski also added dazzling shine to show themes such as: Gilded Angel, an opulent look featuring exquisite embroidery, beading and crystals; Dream Girl, a sparkling Fifties pin-up and high-end boudoir look; Spicy Adventure, which introduced colourful ethnic and gypsy-inspired outfits; and Urban Pink —think Rihanna meets Cara Delevigne — which made an edgy statement before the glamorous grand finale, the black and white Angel Ball. Monica Mitro, EVP Brand Communications & Events at Victoria's Secret said: “We were thrilled to partner with Swarovski on the 2014 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Their crystals add a unique shine and brilliance to our collection, that truly can only be achieved by Swarovski.” Swarovski Executive Board Member Markus Langes-Swarovski states: “We are very proud of our twelve-year partnership with Victoria's Secret, and excited to welcome the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show to London for the first time. Throughout our collaboration we have worked together to delight audiences by lighting up the runway

secure their spot CHRISTCHURCH-BASED SIMONE WATSON WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE FASHION PROGRAMME FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

Daniel Kwok Michaela Poots was a former top Kiwi snow skiing athlete, however due to a career-ending injury she looked to fashion as a new focus. Her collection is based on the notion of completion, the abuse of beauty and the wabi-sabi desire of “things” imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Christchurch-based Simone Watson went straight into the fashion programme from high school. Her collection is based on physicist Stephen Hawking's idea that in the future, des ign will look and think about things biologically rather than mechanically. Originally hailing from Timaru, Kelsi Bennett studied psychology before being accepted into the fashion programme at Otago Polytechnic. Bennett's collection is inspired by biker gang culture and '90s nostalgia. Four of these selected designers - Poots, Kwok, Watson and Chambers-Watson - were also part of a nine-strong contingent from the Otago Polytechnic who showed at Shanghai Fashion Week this year. Dr. Margo Barton, Otago Polytechnic's

Simone Watson School of Design academic leader and principal lecturer (Fashion) says, “The selected students each show some very meaningful themes and innovative techniques in their collections. In particular, all the graduates developed their own textiles, ranging from textile printing, embroidery, machine knitting and texturizing, which gives their collections a creative edge. “Showing on the catwalk alongside Dunedin fashion icons No m*d, Carlson and Mild Red as well as the special guest designers is the most amazing career launching pad for these talented young designers.” Tickets to the hugely popular iD Dunedin Fashion Week runway shows will go on sale on 30 January. Flavourful gluten-free recipes Successful New Zealand food writer, Emma Galloway learned to love fresh, healthy and delicious food growing up in a creative whole-food-loving family. Her passion shines through in the delectable recipes and photographs in her debut cookbook, My Darling Lemon Thyme: Recipes from my real food kitchen – as does her philosophy that natural, whole food should be flavoursome, fun and easy to prepare.

M

y Darling Lemon Thyme takes its name from Emma's food blog which she began as a place to share glutenfree vegetarian recipes after discovering she and her two children suffered from food intolerances. Her blog now receives over 125,000 hits a month. “My aim is to inspire people with fresh, simple, flavourful recipes and to help break down the boring, flavourless stigma commonly attached to allergy-free eating,” says Emma. Sweetcorn & Basil Fritters Makes 12 Fritters Ingredients: 2 fresh corn cobs, husks removed (or 2 cups frozen corn kernels) 2/3 C chickpea (chana or besan) flour 1/3 C tapioca or gluten-free organic cornflour 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp sea salt 1 large free-range egg, separated ½ C cold water ¼ C roughly chopped basil leaves 2 Tbsp finely chopped chives Olive oil or ghee

Method: Place corn in a large saucepan of salted water, bring to the boil and cook until tender. Remove from the heat, drain and set aside until cool enough to handle, then shave corn kernels off the cob with a sharp knife. If you are using frozen corn kernels, plunge into boiling water for a few minutes, then drain before using. Sift flours and baking powder into a bowl and add sea salt and a few pinches of freshly ground black pepper. Combine egg yolk and ½ cup cold water and add to the flour mixture, whisking to form a smooth, thin batter. Add corn, basil and chives and mix to combine. Cover and set aside on the bench for at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour.

When ready to cook, whisk the egg white in a clean bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold 1-2 tablespoons of egg white into the batter to loosen the mixture before gently folding in the rest with a large metal spoon. Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil or ghee in a heavy-based frying pan over medium heat and cook large spoonfuls of batter for 2-3 minutes or until bubbles show on the top and the underside is golden. Flip fritters over with a wide metal fish slice and cook for a few minutes longer until golden and cooked through. Repeat until all the batter is cooked. Drain fritters on paper towels and sprinkle with extra sea salt to serve.

“Play

KIDSZONE

Learning is 'child's play' Play is the foundation for all learning for young children and a rich, stimulating environment is integral to providing a variety of valuable learning opportunities. “Children learn through play and being involved in activities that interest them,” explains centre director of Lollipops Educare Juliette Thompson.

P

lay is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” A rich and stimulating environment licensed for 75 children nestled comfortably on Blighs Road, Strowan Lollipops Educare features separate play areas for each age group and a learning programme specific to each group. Open from 7.30am to 5.45pm each week day and closed only on public and statutory holidays, Lollipops is divided into four classrooms featuring separate play areas designed to meet the unique learning needs of each age group. And what could be more comforting than knowing your children are receiving age appropriate learning opportunities in a safe and nurturing environment, especially when it comes to your 'under-twos' because, for many, the nursery staff are the first additional carers for their young children. “Our under-twos area is divided into two separate spaces, both of which are beautiful environments and a real home away from home,” Juliette explains. “Each has its own sleep room and access to a fun outdoor play area. We have heat pumps and lovely cots and toddler beds to ensure that sleep-time is warm and comfortable.” The Lollipops 'over-twos' area includes two classrooms; one for children aged 2–3½ years and one for children aged 3½-5 years, each with access to an outdoor play area. For ages 3½-5 teachers identify and foster skills and interests in children, setting projects relating to these interests. A literacy room, with a computer and writing equipment, plays an important role in this class.

“CHILDREN LEARN THROUGH PLAY AND BEING INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES THAT INTEREST THEM.” “We have a real focus on following the children's interests and learning through play,”

Juliette says. “All our learning programmes feature a large component of uninterrupted play, allowing children to explore and learn at their own pace. We recognise the benefits this has on a child's development.” To find out more visit the centre at 40-42 Blighs Road in Strowan, phone (03) 351 1030 or visit www.lollipopseducare.co.nz.

Located at 1 Onslow Road, Lake Hayes Estate, Grazë's restaurant, boutique bar and grocer are three separate but interlinking parts and the interiors have been designed by leading Auckland interior designers Paul Izzard Design (PID). PID is an award-winning company specialising in hospitality design and

Hamish, originally hailing from Southland, owns Auckland bar Brew on Quay and Jana has extensive experience in the hospitality industry. The couple moved to Queenstown in June 2013 so Hamish could help run his family farm in Southland. Grazë's restaurant seats 70 diners inside and 70 outside – the outside diners are kept warm with a heated bench seat while inside diners can marvel at the stylish ethanol-fuelled fireplace suspended from the ceiling. Designed with sustainability in mind, Grazë incorporates a 9.2-kilowatt photovoltaic power generation system on the roof. Talented local chef Carl Veint leads the Grazë kitchen. Pizza bar a Some names come to mean more than simple words they represent an experience and become synonymous with a city itself.

Mary's Mixologist shares the secret behind making a sensational Sidecar…

How to make a Sidecar The Sidecar is often singled out as the only good cocktail to come out of the long national nightmare that was Prohibition. And when you're sipping one, you almost think it was all worth it. The luminous, goldenstraw colour, the perfectly controlled sweetness, the jazzy high notes of the citrus against the steady bass of the brandy…

Glassware Usually served in a martini glass, several types are available. Personally I prefer using Luigi Bormioli Bach Martini glasses available from Total Food Equipment, which are an elegant fluted glass.

Recipe 15 ml Cointreau or triple sec 15 ml lemon juice 60 ml cognac Take a lemon wedge and use it to moisten the rim of a chilled cocktail glass. Frost the moistened outer rim of the glass with superfine sugar. Shake ingredients together with cracked ice and strain into prepared cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon twist, and serve. Bloody Mary's is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary's Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

innie Bagoes is one of these, with the Christchurch icon bringing gourmet pizzas to the city since they first opened their doors in Lichfield Street 20 years ago. Winnies Ferrymead offers the same great tastes on the east side of the city, with a focus on providing a family-friendly environment for locals and visitors alike. “We thought the East side was a great area to slot in a Winnie's, and with the Speights Ale House, Tony's and now the new Italian place next door, we have a great food and beverage offering for the East,” says owner Mike Knowles. “Our menu has been around since the inception of Winnies and we are still using a lot of the same recipes. We do make slight changes every year but people love Winnies because they know what they are getting.” Old favourites include Chicken Cranberry and Brie, Kiwi Craving, Marinara, Grand Chicago, Spicy

Lamb and Chicken Souvlaki, with salads and pastas also on the menu, as well as gluten-free and vegetarian options. Much of the appeal of Winnie's is in its versatility, and the ease with which it has been woven into the fabric of the local community. “Winnie's is the place to just be yourself. We offer a fun relaxed space where you can let your hair down at the end of a busy day, have a night out with the family, party till the wee hours of the morning when we have gigs on, or call in for a quiet drink,” says Mike. “Having a young family myself I know how hard it is to find a place to take all the family. We are extremely family focused and welcome them with open arms.” As well as a great Kids Menu, they also offer their own Kids Pizza School. the idea for the pizza classes four years ago. They have proven to be extremely popular over the school holidays and weekends, and a novel and fun birthday party option. Classes are held twice a day, catering for 6 – 20 children, with each child learning to make their own pizza from scratch under Winnie's expert guidance, for $10 per child/hour or $15 including drinks and ice cream. The function area out the front of the restaurant has provided Winnie's Ferrymead with the perfect space for special events, including birthday and anniversary

celebrations as well as sporting events, work outings, and their monthly comedy nights. “It's a great space to have a party your way,” says Mike, with the area catering for a sit down meal for 80 people, or cocktail styles for up to 100. “We supply the sound system so you can have your own music, projectors and screens for all those embarrassing slide shows, set menus to suit your budget, and of course Winnie's pizza.” As a community based restaurant Mike and the team at Winnie's are passionate about supporting their local neighbourhood.

They offer fundraising events for local groups, with the idea being to offer a fun and easy way for a group to raise up to $1000 in just one event, as well as sponsoring a multitude of local sports clubs in Ferrymead, Lyttelton and Sumner, Mt Pleasant and Redcliffs. “We have an extremely loyal local customer base and love seeing the same people come back time after time,” says Mike. “We care about you, your family, your sports team, the local school, and we love being part of the East side.”

Avocado helps curb cravings Research shows adding a few slices of avocado to your lunch will slash your desire to eat over the next three hours by 40 per cent compared to eating the same meal without it.

“OTHER RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN NUTRITION JOURNAL FOUND PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY EAT AVOCADOS WEIGH 3.4KG LESS ON AVERAGE, AND HAVE WAISTLINES AROUND 4CM SMALLER, THAN THOSE WHO DON'T.”

A

study, published in Nutrition Journal*, focused on overweight adults to see if avocado consumption helped them feel more satisfied and reduced their desire to eat in the following few hours. Researchers at Loma Linda University in the United States conducted randomised singleblind crossover trials where participants ate a standard breakfast followed by one of three test lunches – one without avocado, one that included avocado and one where extra avocado was added. The volunteers' glucose and insulin responses were measured, along with their feelings of satisfaction and desire to eat over the next five hours. The study found those who added half a fresh avocado to their lunch reported a 40 per cent decrease in desire to eat again over the next three hours, and a 28 per cent decrease in the following five hours.

Participants also reported feeling more satisfied (26 per cent) during the course of the afternoon following their avocado lunch. Satiety is an important factor in weight management, because people who feel satisfied are less likely to snack between meals, said Dr Joan Sabaté, Chair of the Department of Nutrition who led the research team at Loma Linda University. It was also noted that though adding avocados increased participants' calorie and carbohydrate intake at lunch, there was no

increase in blood sugar levels beyond what was observed after eating the standard lunch. This leads them to believe that avocado's potential role in blood sugar management is worth further investigation. The study was funded by the Americanbased Hass Avocado Board. New Zealand Avocado CEO Jen Scoular says there are many international studies underway to uncover the health benefits of avocados. “Other research published in Nutrition Journal found people who regularly eat avocados weigh 3.4kg less on average, and have waistlines around 4cm smaller, than those who don't,” Scoular says. “Avocados are rich in monounsaturated ('good') fats and are a low GI (glycaemic index) food, so they will help you to feel fuller for longer.” Another reason avocado will help fill you up is they are packed with fibre. Half an avocado will provide more than 25 per cent of your daily recommended fibre intake. * www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/201401/fl-nre010714.php

EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Key trends for new houses Smaller homes, brighter interiors and customised kitchens were key trends for new houses in 2014.

T

he four-bedroom, two-bathroom home was number one on the 'wish list' of those building in 2014, says Generation Homes, a trend that looks set to continue in the year ahead. The company reports that 59 percent of its customers built four-bedroom properties in 2014, while 38 percent built three-bedroom and three percent built five-bedroom houses. “The standard four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is still the most popular among homeowners,” says Generation Homes Christchurch North Director David Mansel. “Homes larger than five-bedrooms are becoming less commonplace in today's market, which is consistent with the new trend of

building smaller homes – confirmed by the average house size among group home builders decreasing by 24-square metres in the past year.” Housing affordability, increasing concern for the environment and an effort to reduce energy costs could be behind the new 'less is more' philosophy,” says David.

“WE HAVE SAID GOODBYE TO THE DARK TONES OF GREYS AND BEIGES THAT HAVE BEEN PREDOMINANT OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.”

“Quality, functionality and design have taken over from square-footage, and people are looking at ways to build a really smart, yet smaller and efficient home for their family.” In terms of interior design trends there was a swing back to lighter colour palettes in 2014, according to home stylist Jennifer King from House Couture.

“We have said goodbye to the dark tones of greys and beiges that have been predominant over the last few years,” she says. “Bright colours have made a comeback with pastel tones coming through really strongly, and house exteriors are also moving away from the dark colours and going back to traditional white. “In 2014 we saw a huge movement towards the Scandinavian look of light wood and white tones – a trend that I expect to continue in the year ahead.” Customers were most concerned with the heart of the home, the kitchen. Walk-in pantries, white cabinetry and neutral palettes were key kitchen trends in 2014. Other trends in 2014 included covered outdoor entertaining areas, walk-in wardrobes and edible gardens.

The great Kiwi bach Kiwis love the outdoors - whether it's relaxing at the beach, mountain biking in summer, or hitting the slopes in the winter. No matter the season, we're eager to make the most of the unique lifestyle New Zealand has to offer.

WHETHER YOU'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO OWN ONE, RENT ONE FROM TIME TO TIME, OR BORROW YOUR FRIEND'S GETAWAY PAD FOR THE ODD WEEKEND, BACHES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR CULTURE.

Stargazer bach

O

ur baches form a big part of this, whether you're lucky enough to own one, rent one from time to time, or borrow your friend's getaway pad for the odd weekend, baches are an important part of our culture. Mostly small, baches are homes away from home. They don't need the extra storage space, large bedrooms or extra heating that we generally have in our everyday houses. They're usually simple, low-maintenance constructions that can be visited whenever a holiday is needed, and left unattended until a getaway is required again. Maurice Regeer of MnM Design Ltd is a professional member of ADNZ and is definitely known for his bach designs. A regular ADNZ award winner for his holiday homes, he sees them as an opportunity to be adventurous with design. "With baches, people often accept far more from a designer than they would for their house. They tend to use materials and colours they wouldn't normally consider using. We did

one that had an orange front door and more orange colouring throughout the interior. It's great to do that kind of stuff with a bach," says Maurice. Maurice has designed about eight baches around Ohakune, mostly for snow-lovers who take advantage of their holiday spots in the winter months. He's won regional awards in the ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards and has been a finalist twice for his baches "Stargazer" and "Magnolia Bach". While baches are generally small, Maurice

says this doesn't mean they need to be lacking in creativity. In fact, he says their size creates the chance to find innovative ways to make the most of a smaller area. "You're designing somebody's dream holiday destination - they don't live there full-time, so it needs to be a lock-up and go situation. With baches you're usually ok with less, as long as it's designed well. You don't need massive storage or wardrobes, you just need to find clever ways to create space.

"YOU'RE DESIGNING SOMEBODY'S DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION - THEY DON'T LIVE THERE FULL-TIME, SO IT NEEDS TO BE A LOCK-UP AND GO SITUATION. WITH BACHES YOU'RE USUALLY OK WITH LESS, AS LONG AS IT'S DESIGNED WELL.”

Magnolia bach

While baches present creative opportunities, Maurice says it's also important to consider the structure's surrounds. As holiday destinations, baches should be all about transition between the indoors and outdoors. "One of the main things is embracing the outdoors. No matter what you do, if it's close to the sea, the lake, or the mountains, it's always associated with the outdoors. If it does that then I think that makes it a successful bach," says Maurice. When considering building a bach it's important to also think about energy efficiency. Maurice says extra insulation and a wood fire can often avoid the need for heating, and the use of LED lights can mean cheaper power bills. "An obligation that we as designers

need to stick to is that every house needs to be as energy efficient as possible, and with baches this is especially important. I try to make baches as eco-friendly as I can, they're well insulated and have appliances with good energy ratings." In terms of energy saving, Maurice says the orientation of the building is the most important factor, with the heat of the sun being used as a means of passive heating. For Maurice, one of the most rewarding parts of designing baches is seeing the enjoyment his clients get out of them. "It's great seeing photos on the fridge and in family albums of them having a good time and using the bach as designed."

HOME A mid-century home on the edge of the Californian desert used a perfectly balanced mix of serene blues, tactile glass and pristine whites to create a cooling, relaxing retreat from hot desert winds – it's a winning colour palette that can work equally well in coastal bathrooms.

A cool desert bathroom… C

olour inspiration came from the blue skies of the surrounding desert with key fixtures such as glass basins and contemporary styled cast iron bath coming from Kohler. The light grey high gloss floor tiles add a further dimension to the otherwise two-toned space – while the white fixtures pop in contrast to the serene blue wall hues.

The unique texture of Kohler's Nature's Chemistry spun glass basins is the perfect complement to the sleek, hard surfaces – there are a number in the range, including an under bench design and a beautifully crafted cast glass 'wading pool' style. The cast iron bath is a refreshing contemporary take on the traditional freestanding bath – its modernist design incorporates geometric faceted lines, wider back ledge for storage of bathing products and elevated plinth to increase the architectural statement of the piece.

Wallmount tapware contributes to the clean, uncluttered aesthetic. And in warm climates it's essential to get the showering options right! Here the owners have used a combination of the bluetooth enabled Moxie and the overhead RainCan shower head. Moxie streams music, talk and podcasts directly into the shower stall through an integrated speaker in the showerhead. For details go to www.kohler.co.nz.

Outdoor rooms External affairs with Tim Goom

Creating a year round outdoor lifespacetm

Summer entertaining is now in full swing! During this time the limitations placed upon outdoor entertaining from a lack of space and Canterbury's unpredictable climate often become apparent. An increasingly popular solution is the 'outdoor room' which allows homeowners to bring the comforts of their indoor spaces outdoors. An outdoor room can increase the floor space and value of your house and provide a perfect expansion of your entertaining area.

T

he options for outdoor rooms are enormously varied and the design can be tailored to meet your specific lifestyle, budget and the architecture of your home. Often the outdoor room will adjoin the house, extending the living space of the home without requiring internal building or renovation. There are no rules, however an outdoor room can be a stand-alone structure entirely independent of the house (for example a comfortable living area near a pool some distance from the house). It can have four walls or be partially open to the elements. The purpose of your outdoor room will be one of the first decisions you make: Will it be for entertaining? Or a recreational family area? Or a dedicated intimate space to maximise a view?

Comfort An outdoor room will extend your living space outside, whilst retaining the comfort available within your internal living areas. It makes sense to ensure it is an inviting space where you want to spend time. Comfort features to consider include:

· · · ·

Providing protection from wind and rain, enabling shade in the summer and sun in the winter Furniture - comfy sofas and chairs adorned with cushions and throws which blend or contrast with the surrounding landscape Rugs to add warmth to hard floors Music systems or plasma TVs Heating will be an important consideration to maximise year round use. The ambience created by a flickering wood or gas fire (or a less permanent option of a brazier) is appealing to many, but other discreet heating choices such as panel heating may suit smaller spaces

Design Careful design from the outset is crucial to get the most out of your outdoor room. A landscape architect can advise you on the most important design aspects for consideration. For example: · Assessing site characteristics such as gradient, aspect, proximity of neighbouring properties and traffic · Access to utilities will require consideration early in the design process · Ensuring flow from the house to the outdoor room and through to the garden (perhaps by the use of sliding/folding doors or shutters) · Which water features, sculpture or artwork are suitable · Which focal points in the garden you wish to be maintained. Are there specific aspects of the garden you want the outdoor room to frame? This might be a visual focus on particular plants or landscaping or an olfactory focus ensuring sufficient proximity to fragrant flowerbeds · Can the design of the outdoor room accommodate any possible future additions, such as a swimming pool or spa or adjoining BBQ/cooking area? · Minimising risks - ensuring guests don't topple off any edges through the use of balustrades, carefully positioned furniture, pot plants or lighting should ensure future social invitations are accepted! · Outdoor rooms will often have a fireplace as a central feature. Wood or gas burners or firepits are options which will ensure your outdoor room can remain a cosy sanctuary, even during the cooler months. · There are many roofing choices to consider, including solid roofing, retractable roofing or louvres. An outdoor room can greatly enhance the functionality and style of your home. Careful attention to design detail from the outset will ensure you achieve a comfortable, stylish outside lifespaceTM.

New to market

HOME

Metropol takes a look at some of the latest products, gadgets and accessories on the market… It's black and white for tables Cool classic meets urban sophistication in the new black and white collection of fine porcelain tableware from Noritake. Extending its original boutique collection of BoB/WoW dinnerware, Noritake has reinforced the trend for monochromatic ceramics with this beautifully textured collection of plates, bowls, platters and tea/coffee items. While the look of black or white - and a combination of the two - is utterly timeless Noritake has taken this to the next level with the addition of a tactile surface texture inspired by the undulations of desert dunes. Each piece, be it black or white, features the rippled dune texture and can be used in concert with its monochromatic sister-pieces or as a mix and match – black on white or vice versa. The fine porcelain used for each piece is both dishwasher and microwave safe as well as chip resistant. For more information go to www.noritake.com.au. Think black – for the bathroom Black has long been used to make a statement in both fashion and design – smart, sophisticated and always stylish, black can be used to introduce real impact, especially in bathrooms. While some black tapware has been available for a while, Tradelink has taken things to the next level with the introduction of a complete range of quality basin and shower tapware plus matching accessories – all in beautiful matte black. The obvious and perfect partner for monochromatic and all white bathrooms, black can also be used to create super-bold decoration and a deep sense of luxe when paired with metallics such as silver, copper or bronze or with stones and textured neutrals. Accessories are key to 'getting the look' and there is no shortage of towel rails (single and double), soap dishes, shelves, toilet roll holders and robe hooks – all with similar profiles that complement the tapware. For more information go to www.tradelink.com.au

Freeze, drop and enjoy Sit back, relax and enjoy a refreshing beverage this summer with the new Zoku Ice Ball. Designed to melt slowly and evenly, the fuss of always having ice cubes ready or serving lukewarm drinks, is gone. Whether it's a refreshing juice or zesty cocktail, the slow melting ice ball ensures no dilution to maintain full flavour satisfaction. Simply fill the silicon mould with liquid and freeze for eight hours to create a perfectly round sphere of ice. For a creative twist, try filling the Zoku Ice Ball with herbs, fruit pieces or flowers to create decorative ice spheres.

Elements

Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or "starting from scratch" with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of design include space, line, form, colour, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.

Space Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively. Line The lines in a room are second only to colour in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is stra ight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasising the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create. 타 Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also

balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture. Ÿ Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms. Ÿ *Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals. Ÿ Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine. Form Lines that join together produce the form, or shape, of an object, which in turn impacts the overall feeling of a room. Straight lines create rectangles, squares and triangles. Curved lines form circles and ovals. The rectangle is the

most popular form and is often the dominant shape in a room. Triangles provide stability and curved shapes soften the contours of objects. Colour More than any other element, colour can make a room beautiful. Colour can set the mood. It can make a room warmer or cooler, larger or smaller. It can hide unsightly features or call attention to the centre of interest. Even with the simplest furnishings, the proper use of colour can transform a room. Texture Texture is playing an increasingly important role in home decorating. Visual texture is a material's apparent smoothness or roughness. To maintain and enhance a casual feeling, use fabrics that are more heavily textured, nubby or rough in visual texture. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as silk, moiré, chintz and silk-like looks support a more

Moments of Architect Cymon Allfrey guides us through his top architectural moments of 2014…

Cymon Allfrey

As the rebuild and repair of our city continues to gain momentum, we need to take the time to savour the city as it is now, not simply as it is going to be.

A

n architectural moment is a complex thing to describe. It is that sensory experience you get when you engage with a building or site. It is not just about how it looks, feels or sounds, but about its all - what the building does to you. It is that accidental view across a site or a little noise that attracts you to look up and experience or engage with a building in a different way. So how do you make one happen? Get out of your car and move through the city slowly. Stop, enjoy and take your time. Experience your surrounds and pay attention. You will start to see our city in a whole new way. For me there are a number of exciting buildings, sights and experiences to be had – and most importantly there are more to come.

1. Stranges Lane For me this architectural feat is all about hope, it is a tangible realisation that the energy of the city is back. It evokes a similar sensation as walking out of a cinema at three in the afternoon and being surprised it is still daylight. The vibe and energy found within Stranges Lane is counter intuitive to the demolition and construction you are faced with when you leave. It gives us hope that the city is coming back. Pre-quake, Christchurch had embraced laneways in a manner which saw their utilitarian use transform them into great places to be. Places of character. I was concerned that the qualities of a laneway couldn't be recreated, or done with honesty. However walking into Stranges Lane you are confronted with the successful qualities and character of our prequake lanes. This is an example of architectural magic; these buildings allow us to experience the space between old and new.

2. Victoria Street In a similar way to Stranges Lane, Victoria Street offers a sense of hope. As the gateway to the city, Victoria Street offers a dream or illusion of a rebuilt Christchurch. With an extensive array of eateries and bars, walking down Victoria Street it is easy to forget that you are standing in one of the largest building sites in the Southern Hemisphere. The real hero of this street however is going to be the North end. It is both special and exciting to be seeing adventure in architecture being played out with Knox Plaza. What I like about the Knox Church restoration and the surrounding plaza is that it is a family of buildings, which illustrate respect to one another. This North end will be highly regarded as an exemplar of small-scale urban design.

SITTING IN THE THEATRE AND EXPERIENCING THE SPACE THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING SENSE OF WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY. -Issac Theatre Royal

3. Isaac Theatre Royal The skeptics of the Cathedral restoration need to visit the Isaac Theatre Royal, as it is one of the most remarkable 'restorations' we have seen to date and shows real faith in the people of our city and our architectural fraternity. Sitting in the theatre and experiencing the space there is an overwhelming sense of where there is a will, there is a way. If you didn't know the history of the building, you would never know it had been rebuilt in such an in-depth manner. The building has been put back together with homage to the past, with the quirks that made it unique, and a nod to the future in its improved construction methods and practicalities. It is not about recreating the past, but about creating a sense of authenticity. It is a physical reminder of our history and a clear example of where there is a will there is a way. If we, as a city want character and history in our buildings, then we can.

5. The Town Hall

4. PwC Centre The ruins of the former PwC Centre are a tribute to the building, the businesses and the people that went through not only a terrible experience during the quakes, but lost so much in the days, months and years that have gone since. And experiencing these ruins is a special, contemplative and harsh reminder of what our city has been through. Caught somewhere between a contemporary Greek or Roman ruin site and a post-apocalyptic scene, this is an architectural moment that will come and go and is a must-visit b efore it is lost.

A room without tiles is like a body without a soul... For consummate skill in

One of the most heavily published views of the Town Hall during its design and construction was the Kilmore Street Façade. It was a visual put out there to engage and encourage the public in the brightness of the future associated with this building. And now over forty years later that original view can once again be seen. And like the PwC Centre, this is an architectural experience that won't be around for long. Standing at the back of the former Convention Centre site on Peterborough Street you are able to drink an iconic view. A view which encapsulates the Town Hall for what was envisioned, while beautifully illustrating why it is such a treasured and celebrated building. www.caarc.co.nz

Joyful

organised chaos One enchanted customer describes her visits to the Flower Bazaar, at 406 Innes Road, Mairehau, as being like Alice in Wonderland.

T

IT'S DENSELY PACKED WITH VEGETATION OF ALL KINDS, INCLUDING SOME FLOWERS. THE NARROW PATHS LEAD YOU PAST POPPIES TO THE LOVEBIRDS IN AN AVIARY.

here may be no Cheshire Cat or March Hare there but there are certainly so many other surprises, both within the shop and the garden behind, that one cannot help but wonder what one has gotten into. On the footpath outside the entrance, there's a clutch of metal roosters pecking away at real seeds. There are also some flowers, both real and ceramic, and a few odd knick-knacks. Once inside, your attention is first caught by the big Gustav Klimt painting that covers the back wall, and then one begins to wonder whether one has really entered a florist's because there seem to be 10 times as many quirky collectibles scattered around as there are flowers. Yes, there certainly are flowers there – including top quality roses, gerberas and lilies, plus some white orchids – but there is also much other stuff – small figurines, ceramic pots, comic signs, toys. The owner and creator of the Flower Bazaar, Ian Harvey, assures me that about 80 percent of his sales are of flowers, many in bouquets for weddings and funerals, so there seems to be little doubt in his mind what this shop is all about. But he is also eager to take you into his back garden, which is nothing like any other garden I have ever been in, and is certainly a far cry from what I would expect a florist's to look like. It's densely packed with vegetation of all kinds, including some flowers. The narrow paths lead you past poppies to the lovebirds in an aviary; a table and chairs where Ian occasionally has a wine with friends in the garden on a Saturday afternoon; and dare I mention that cactus plant, sitting in a pot up on the corner of a ledge, with two prickly limbs dangling over the side like legs – the rest I will leave to your imagination!

HOME By Hans Petrovic

“I TRY TO BUY SEASONAL FLOWERS AT THE FLOWER MARKET AND SOME TROPICAL FLOWERS IN WINTER. USUALLY, I BUY FLOWERS THAT I KNOW ARE GOING TO LAST. THEY HAVE TO BE ONES THAT MAKE ME DIFFERENT TO OTHER FLORISTS – THERE HAS TO BE A POINT OF DIFFERENCE.”

Ian sat me down at another outside table and brought me an excellent latte from the café next door, but before we could start our actual interview, we were overwhelmed by visitors – most of them women who were full of praise for everything at the Flower Bazaar. “It's paradise” and “joyful organised chaos” were two descriptions that everyone agreed upon. Another woman was taken by the blue flamingos and the “metal aeroplanes with propellers going round”. “Even in winter, this is a good place to come for a lift. I don't know if it was systematically planned, but it's thoughtful,” said another. However, it is Ian who sums it up best: “A garden is like a giant bouquet to me.” Ian takes his interest in flowers and collecting things back 20 years, when he was commercially growing flowers in glasshouses with mechanical sprinklers on five acres of land in Ashburton. There were 12,000 roses grown under glass, and

some peonies outdoors. There was also a little cottage in the garden that contained “a lot of old stuff.” He describes himself as a self-taught florist who wanted to get the personal touch to everything he was creating, and this eventually brought him to the Flower Bazaar 3½ years ago. “This place changes every day and I keep bringing things in, a lot of them from the Shabby Chic Market. I started the garden on the first day here. It was just an idea in my head and the garden just evolved,” Ian says. He maintains that the flowers are the most important things of all. “I try to buy seasonal flowers at the flower market and some tropical flowers in winter. Usually, I buy flowers that I know are going to last. They have to be ones that make me different to other florists – there has to be a point of difference,” he says.
